I was asked by a young associate once ... "How did you plan to meet up before you had mobile phones?"
Once I recovered from suddenly feeling extremely old, I realized it was a pretty good question, and that there's a huge generation of people out there who have no idea how to preplan a casual meet-up, especially when you're not quite sure when you'll be there.
My answer? We would arrange for an approximate time in a location where you could keep busy if the other person was late or you were early. You would often have a book or magazine to keep you company, or you'd buy the paper and grab a coffee. Wow, even the idea of buying the paper or a magazine seems a little old fashioned now.
But even with a mobile phone, casual meet ups can still be a little hit and miss. Sue and I have this problem all the time. You see, I'm always late (because I'm the queen of getting lost, even WITH gps), and Sue is always early. We usually plan to meet up outside the client's office 5-10 minutes before the meeting, but inevitably Sue is left trying to explain to the client that I'm probably stuck in traffic and she'd sure I won't be long. Meanwhile she's hoping the praying that I'll walk through the door right now.
Then we discovered a totally cool and totally free phone app called "GLYMPSE".
Now I don't have to worry about trying to send sneaky little text messages while stuck in traffic, and Sue can check exactly how far away I am.
All I do is open the app, invite Sue (and/or a client) by SMS or email to watch my location for a set period of time. They get a notification with a link to the map, which is almost to the second accurate.
Android, Apple & PC friendly

This blog article has be inspired by my fabulous skill of being able to get lost even when using a GPS, and therefore leaving my business partner hanging in the wind at meetings.
