Tips to avoid being boring at your next event

Don't just survive a Networking event, but learn to enjoy it.

Whether you go to events for networking all the time, or you're new to the circuit, we have a few tips which should help you make the most of your next event.

1. You're not there to Get
When you attend an event with the main purpose of getting something, you send out the wrong message.

Change your mindset. Show that you're there to contribute and help others. Thinking like this and you'll releive the pressure on yourself which will boost your confidence to develop strong relationships and attract loads of referrals.

2. Try to Avoid desperation
In any situation, personal or business, appearing desperate and needy is a major turn-off. If you set aside your needs when interacting with others, you'll enjoy your networking experience more, and will be more likely to make useful contacts.

3. Be sincere in what you say
Regardless of what people say, avoid the "elevator pitch" when meeting someone for the first time. Use plain language, and avoid industry jargon. And if you find yourself on the end of one of those conversations, try to shift it by asking a simple open ended question.

4. Ask Open Questions
A general rule of thumb is that "why" questions generate interesting answers. Also people tend to remember conversations more fondly when they are asked to talk about themselves and their own business.

5. Avoid Drinking
While you may feel more confident after a few stiff drinks, you're not actually on top of your game. You may feel a conversation is going well, but by showing lack of self control you are portraying yourself as someone others don't wish to work with.

6. Don't Pick and Choose your contacts
By chatting to everyone, you may surprise yourself and find a new client through someone who knows someone. Appreciate and show your full attention to each person you meet and don't be dismissive.

7. Practice makes perfect
Like all skills, networking takes practice. Especially if you lack confidence. The only way to improve your skills is to get out there and just do it.
