Network, Network, Network. But how?
With a little preparation and practice, you can really make the most of every event.
Before you leave home
1. Work out why you are attending the event and what you wish to achieve by going. Knowing ahead of time helps you maintain focus.
2. Dress to Impress
Dress comfortably but appropriately. Depending on the type of business you run, and the event your are attending will assist when you look in your wardrobe.
3. Bring business cards
Bring more than you'll need. If it's a "Poken" event, take your time to setup your profile before the event, or as quickly after the event as possible.
4. How to make an Effective Introduction
When you meet someone, make eye contact, smile and state your first and last name. Give a firm but brief handshake. Listen for the other person's name, and use it at lease 2 times. This will not only help you remember, but makes you sound more sincere.
5. Listen first
The big secret to being successful at networking is to let the other person speak first. The person who speaks first is only being half listened to, so take the opportunity to ask questions first, to allow your contact to be more focused when you speak.
6. Be sincere and show interest
By asking questions about what your contact has been talking about, shows you're not only listening but are also interested in them. They in turn will show more interest when you speak.
7. Be direct and to the point

8. Take Notes
Even the most experienced networkers will forget people and conversations. So when you have a quiet moment, find a corner and make some notes. Be sure to any any personal items and physical descriptions to help prompt your memory.

9. Follow up
Not immediately, but a few days after the event, send follow-up emails to anyone you connected with. Use your notes to personalise each email, some of the conversation. Connecting through Linkedin is also a good option.
